The St. Louis Blues and restricted free-agent Jaden Schwartz agreed to terms on a two-year, $4.7 million contract on Saturday. The new deal has an annual average value of $2.35 million, including $2 million in first year and $2.7 million in the second. The 22-year-old winger scored 25 goals and added 31 assists in 80 games with the Blues last season. We are excited to have Jaden in the fold for the next two seasons, said Blues general manager Doug Armstrong. He is an exciting young talent that will play a key role in the success of our club in the near future. Schwartz has been absent from Blues training camp to date, awaiting a new contract. He will address the media following practice on Monday. In 132 career games, all with the Blues, Schwartz has scored 34 goals and 72 points. Henry scored 12 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, Pau Gasol had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and the Lakers beat the Sacramento Kings 100-86 Sunday night. "I havent played as well these last few games, but I know I can still bring defensive intensity," Henry said. "So I just came out and played the same game, but I just was just a little more aggressive." Steve Blake finished with 12 assists, nine points and five rebounds. The 11-year veteran, who has started all 14 games for the Lakers at point guard in place of the injured Steve Nash, has recorded double digits in assists in each of the last five. "Theres nothing better than being out there and setting guys up for shots," Blake said. "Coach gives me the freedom to do that, and the offence lets you as a point guard create for people. So Im just loving it." The Lakers, back at .500 following their third straight victory, began a stretch of four consecutive games against teams with losing records (Washington, Brooklyn and Detroit). Greivis Vasquez led Sacramento with 20 points and DeMarcus Cousins added 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Reserve guard Isaiah Thomas finished with nine points in 30 minutes and was 4 for 11 from the field, ending his string of double-digit games at 12. "We played everybody they had out there and didnt focus on one person," Henry said. "We just had a simple game plan for each and every possession they had. We just played hard and showed energy, and thats the best thing you can do. When you do that, everything will work itself out." Lakers forward Wesley Johnson turned in perhaps the defensive play of the game less than 4 1/2 minutes in when he when he hustled up court and executed a spectacular chase-down block of Luc Mbah a Moutes fast-break layup. "I dont believe in stopping on any play because you never know whats going to happen," Johnson said, "I just didnt want to quit onn the play.dddddddddddd... I wanted to bring the energy that we needed on the defensive end to set the tone from the very beginning." The Kings played at Staples Center for the second straight day after erasing a 20-point deficit against the Clippers and losing 103-102. They spotted the Lakers a 13-point lead in the second quarter before cutting the deficit to 55-52 with consecutive dunks by Cousins and No.1 draft pick Ben McLemore 42 seconds apart early in the third. But the Lakers maintained the lead the rest of the way, breaking it open with a 13-5 run that put them up 86-69 with 6:57 to play. Vasquez connected on his first six shots, four of them during a 1:37 span, but Los Angeles still led 29-24 after one quarter against a team that came in averaging the fewest first-quarter points in the league (22.6). "The one concern we had coming into the game was their ability to shoot the ball," rookie coach Michael Malone said. "But 14 turnovers, and them outscoring us 22-11 on fast breaks really hurt. And they scored 46 points in the paint." The Kings are 3-4 since Malone inserted McLemore and Jason Thompson into the starting lineup in place of shooting guard Marcus Thornton and forward Patrick Patterson, following the teams 1-5 start without the injured Carl Landry. Landry is expected to be sidelined three to four months because of torn flexor muscle in his left hip, which required surgery on Oct. 15. NOTES: Kings F Travis Outlaw was fined $15,000 by the league for "excessive and unnecessary contact," a day after getting his first career his ejection for his flagrant 2 foul against J.J. Reddick. ... Gasol has a new book out titled "Life - Vida," in which former Los Angeles Times award-winning photographer Lori Shepler chronicled the Laker centres activities on and off the court since the start of the 2010-11 season. ... Sacramento has shot less than 50 per cent from the field in each of its first 13 games. ... Kings coach and director of player development Dee Brown is scheduled to have surgery this week after injuring his knee at practice on Friday. ' ' '

PHILADELPHIA -- Nikolaj Ehlers is a two-sport star who credits his time on the soccer pitch with helping his game on the ice. Ehlers, who played for Denmarks national team until he was 14 before concentrating on hockey, was selected by the Winnipeg Jets with the ninth overall pick in the NHL draft on Friday night. The five-foot-10, 176-pounder was fourth in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with 104 points (49-55) in 63 games with the Halifax Mooseheads this past season. He feels that his soccer skills have helped him develop more speed on the ice, one of the key elements of his game. "I think Im a fast forward," he said. "I think I have a lot of speed I can use on the wing. I like to set up some nice plays and I like to score some goals." Ehlers was the first player from the QMJHL to be selected in the 2014 draft. The 18-year-old took the leagues rookie of the year and offensive rookie of the year honours. Ehlers also had 28 points (11-17) in 16 post-season games for the Mooseheads. "I found myself becoming more of a fan when I watched him play," said Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff. "Any time he got the puck, you felt like something was going to happen. "Hes not the biggest guy when it comes to size, but he plays with such good hockey sense that he knows when to take an opportunity to go, and not really put himself in harms way to try to make a play." Ehlers speed helps compensate for his relatively slight build. "He doesnt have a lot of weight on him so youre going to want him to continue to grow, but hes a pretty strong player," said Cheveldayoff. "The way he plays the game and the way he moves out there, he has some hidden strength that a lot of players maybe his size dont." Ehlers said he planned to hit the gym over the summer. "Obviously, Ive got to get a little bit bigger and stronger," he said. "I can use my speed to get out of the rough time on the ice, but Im not afraid to get hit or hit somebody." Cheveldayoff said the youngster is a well-rounded individual. "His hockey sense is right up there," he said. "And his characters not far behind. This is a player that every time we had an opportunity to meet with him, we didnt want the interview to end. Hes going to be an exciting player for a long time." Ehlers father, Heinz, was drafted 30 years ago by the New York Rangers (No. 188 overall). He spent his 16-season pro career in Europe. Joe Staley Jersey . The defending champions sent their preliminary list to FIFA on Tuesday, with coach Vicente del Bosque to announce the final 23-man squad on May 25. Elvis Grbac Jersey . Nine years later, he might have finally figured it out. He had only five rounds in the 60s in his previous eight trips. Brent Jones Jersey .com) - Theres nothing better for a team than to send out the staff ace in the most important game of the season.TORONTO -- The Kitchener Rangers wasted no time on Saturday addressing one of their most pressing needs. The Rangers took high-scoring centre Adam Mascherin with the second pick in the OHL draft. The five-foot-nine, 197-pound Mascherin had 71 goals and 66 assists in 66 games with the Vaughan Kings and joins a Kitchener squad that scored the third-fewest goals in the OHL this year in posting the leagues second-worst record at 22-41-2-3. There was no drama regarding whod be taken ahead of Mascherin. On Friday, the Sarnia Sting announced they would select American Jakob Chychrun, a six-foot-two, 195-pound defenceman with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens, first overall. "Im really looking forward to playing for coach Trevor, (head coach Trevor Letowski) and my future teammates and working hard with them every day to hopefully one day build this team into a playoff contender," Chychrun said. The 16-year-old Chychrun had 16 goals and 27 assists in 29 games this season. He was also the youngest member of Ontarios team at the U17 World Challenge, where he had a goal and three assists in five games. Chychrun is the son of former NHL defenceman Jeff Chychrun, who won a Stanley Cup in 1992 with the Pittsburgh Penguins. "Were not only bringing into our organization an exceptional hockey player but an extremely mature and great person in general," said Rick Sinclair, the Stings head scout and player-personnel director.dddddddddddd But Chychrun was certainly in the minority as 16 of the 20 first-round picks were forwards. The Ottawa 67s, selecting third overall, continued that trend by taking left-winger Travis Barron, a six-foot-one, 175-pound forward who was teammate of Chychrun with the Jr. Canadiens. Last year, Ottawa had the top pick and used it to select centre Travis Konecny, who was named the leagues top rookie in 2013-14. Konecny, 17, led all OHL first-year players in scoring with 70 points (26 goals, 44 assists) in 63 games. Three Americans went in the first round. After Sarnia took Chychrun, the Niagara IceDogs selected forward Logan Brown at No. 6, The six-foot-four, 210-pound Brown, a native of Chesterfield, Mo., had 25 points (14 goals, 11 assists) in 15 games with the Indiana Ice this season. Then at No. 18, the London Knights took left-winger Max Jones, a six-foot-two, 190-pound forward from Rochester, Mich. Jones had 22 points (nine goals, 13 assists) and 121 penalty minutes in 24 games with the Detroit Honeybaked under-18 squad this season. Both players come from hockey families. Browns father, Jeff, was a former NHL defenceman who holds the St Louis Blues team record for most points by a defenceman (78 in 92-93). Brad Jones played centre for the Winnipeg Jets, Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers from 1986-87 to 1991-92. ' ' '

Na ran off three straight birdies from the third to move to minus-10. The 31-year-old notched seven consecutive pars from the sixth. He had five birdies and a bogey through 11 holes, then closed with seven pars in a row. NOTES: Moore has a piece of the 54-hole lead for the sixth time in his career ... Sunderland has now won just four of its last 32 league games, with just 10 points from the opening 17 fixtures of the season. Norwich has 19 from 17. The spongy instruments add another level of scientific difficulty, which in turn makes for much more insane celebrations when things go right. To be fair, the celebrations are already anything but tame. Nerf ball tricks shots are just the tip of the iceberg for a group that has performed in zero gravity, faced pro-skateboarder Rob Dyrdek and an assembled team on the MTV series "Fantasy Factory", and even hit a basketball trick shot from a passing blimp. One day, hes providing the Blue Jays with Gold Glove-calibre defence at third base. The next, hes more than holding his own at second base. All the while, Lawries posting respectable offensive numbers overall and is providing an elite bat in clutch situations. It would be ignorant to look at Lawries slash line of .224/.275/.412 entering Sundays action and conclude hes having a down year. Consider that Lawrie already has eight home runs, going deep in 4.8 per cent of his at-bats. Thats a marked uptick from last year (2.7 per cent) and 2012 (2.2 per cent). Lawrie also has 26 RBI, which ranks him third on the club behind Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Bautista. His best work has been done with runners in scoring position (RISP). With runners on second, third or both, Lawrie is hitting .366/.400/.732 (1.132 OPS) with four home runs and 21 RBI. All of it, as a reminder, while playing a third base/second base hybrid. Not even Ben Zobrist of the Tampa Bay Rays does that anymore. When Zobrist hasnt been hurt this season, hes predominantly been a second baseman. “I dont see any player in the league doing it, unless youre a utility player, which hes not,” infield coach Luis Rivera told TSN.ca. “Its tough because hes very good at third base. Hes one of the best third baseman and then you have to move to second base. He was at second base before, hes learning the position again and there are a few things he needs to continue to work on and he can be better than what he is right now.” Lawrie goes about his business, taking ground balls during batting practice at the position hes scheduled to play that day. That, in and of itself, would be overwhelming for some players. Yet it isnt for a player, still young, who earned himself a reputation for being hot-headed and immature, two labels which should be dissipating by the day. “Its tough knowing one day youre here, the next day youre there,” said Rivera. “Mentally, you have to prepare. You have to be mentally strong.” The terms “Lawrie” and “mentally strong” didnt used to be used in the same sentence, thanks in large part to incidents like the infamous helmet-throwing incident in May, 2012 and his stare down of Rivera and Adam Lind when Lind didnt score on a Lawrie fly ball 52 Sundays ago.dddddddddddd Considering what hes being asked to do and considering the success with which hes accomplishing the request, maybe its time to give Lawrie some credit. “Theres a lot going on, man,” said Lawrie. “Theres always a lot going on, especially now just from having to play all over the park and just Ive got a lot of stuff going on, but for the most part Im just trying not to think about it too much even though there is a lot going on.” Hes a third baseman, hell tell you that repeatedly and Lawries proud hes made himself an elite third bagger at the big league level, which is a testament to his athleticism. Hes all-in on the move because it makes the platoon splits work for manager John Gibbons. Lawrie is at third and Steve Tolleson at second when Toronto faces a left-handed pitcher; Lawries at second and Juan Francisco at third base when the Blue Jays take on a right-hander. “Its just something that I have to do for the team and its what makes the team a little bit better, so for myself, its just what I have to do in order to make this ball club better and to, obviously, win ballgames,” said Lawrie. “The most important thing is that he wanted to do it,” said Rivera. “So if hes willing to do it, hes going to be fine, but when you fight yourself not to go one place and then play another position, play third base, ‘I dont want to play second base, thats going to make it real hard on him, on the coaches and on the team. Right now, hes willing to do both, so thats the easy part.” After Sundays series-sweeping 3-1 win over Oakland, the Jays sixth in a row, 11th in 13 games and 16th out of 21, getting a buy-in from Lawrie is a much easier task. “Its just fun,” said Lawrie. “Its just good to be competing. Thats the biggest thing is just being able to go out everyday and compete and, obviously, have a chance to win a ballgame every single day. Thats the biggest thing, but just competing on an everyday basis as a group is obviously a lot of fun.” ' ' '

PHOENIX -- Lawyers for former NFL All-Pro safety Darren Sharper are questioning the evidence authorities are using to justify keeping him in jail without bail on charges that he drugged and sexually assaulted two women. Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Warren Granville began a hearing on the subject Wednesday and is expected to conclude it Thursday afternoon. Its the latest development in several ongoing sexual assault investigations involving Sharper in Louisiana, California, Florida, Arizona and Nevada. Bail in Sharpers California rape case was set at $1 million, but he was indicted in Arizona last month on charges of sexual assault and administering dangerous drugs, so authorities in California have kept him jailed. The Arizona Constitution automatically denies bail to people charged with sexual assault if the proof against them is evident or the presumption of guilt is great. The indictment filed last month in Arizona alleges that Sharper gave the sedative zolpidem to three women and then had "sexual intercourse or oral sexual contact" with two of them without their consent on Nov. 21 at an apartment in Tempe. Sharper has not yet entered a plea in the case, although one of his attorneys has said Sharper will deny those allegations. He has pleaded not guilty in the California case. Earlier this month, the judge denied a request from Sharpers attorneys to set bail, ruling that he didnt have jurisdiction until the former player was in Arizona. But Sharpers attorneys said the former player is entitled to a hearing to determine whether Arizona prosecutors have enough evidence to deny him bail. On Wednesday, Tempe police detective Kevin Mace said Sharpers DNA was recovered from the clothing of one of the two sexual assault victims in Arizona, but none of his DNA was found during an exam of the other woman. The detective also said a police search of the apartment turned up a shot glass with a white residue that turned out to be zolpidem, and California investigators have discovered Sharper had a prescription for that drug, which is commonly sold under the brand name Ambien. Team officials travelled to Los Angeles on Thursday night to meet with the free agent, a person with knowledge of the plans said.New Zealand confirmed their status as the best team in the world with a 57-15 thrashing of the Springboks in Durban. It was the sixth consecutive bonus-point win for the world champions, giving them a total of 30 competition points in the Rugby Championship - the maximum on offer.Three penalties from Morne Steyn kept the Springboks in the game up until the break, with New Zealand 12-9 up at half-time after tries from Israel Dagg and TJ Perenara. But as has so often been the case with Steve Hansens side, they were able to ramp things up in the second half. Perenara and Dagg both added a try to their individual tallies, while Beauden Barrett (2), Codie Taylor, Ben Smith and Liam Squire also crossed the line for 45 second-half points. The win takes New Zealand to 17 consecutive Test wins, which brings them level with the record for the most successive wins by a Tier 1 nation. The All Blacks next match is against Australia in Auckland in two weeks time, which will be live on Sky Sports.Things started well for South Africa when slotted his first penalty attempt after five minutes and Barrett, who began the game as the leading Rugby Championship scorer this season with 65 points, fluffed his first shot at goal. Ben Smith runs at Faf de Klerk South Africa were gaining little possession but defended with a lot more spirit than in recent matches in the competition.Steyn slotted another penalty to double the lead to six points before the All Blacks scored their first try through right winger Dagg at the beginning of the second quarter. It was a typical New Zealand score with backs and forwards applying pressure in the danger zone and wwhen the ball was moved wide, a quick pass from flanker Jerome Kaino sent Dagg over.ddddddddddddBarrett was out of luck with the conversion, which struck the near post, leaving the Springboks 6-5 ahead. Given another penalty chance, Steyn made no mistake and the home side led by four points as the match passed the 30-minute mark. The visitors took the lead for the first time when Perenara was awarded a try after numerous replays were shown to the referee, his assistant and the television match official.Perenara appeared to have lost control of the ball forward before dotting down, but he got the nod and Barrett converted for a 12-9 advantage the All Blacks retained until half-time. Shortly before the final whistle New Zealand thought they had scored another try through lock Brodie Retallick, but it was ruled out for obstruction. The second half began as the first ended with the All Blacks on the offensive and Dagg notched his fifth try of this Championship within five minutes of the restart. Once again he went over far out, after passes from Perenara and Barrett set him up, and the fly-half failed to convert, his third miss from four shots at goal.A Steyn penalty kept the Springboks in the hunt, but when full-back Patrick Lambie had a clearance charged down, Barrett won the chase for the loose ball to score. It was becoming an uneven contest between the goal kicking of Steyn and the try-scoring world champions and after the Springboks playmaker slotted a fifth penalty, his side conceded a fifth try.Full-back Smith was the catalyst, winning an aerial duel with Lambie, and slick handling resulted in Perenara scoring and Barrett converting for a 29-15 lead. It went from bad to worse in the closing stages for South Africa as Barrett converted his try and Lima Sopoaga added the extra points to scores by fellow substitute, hooker Taylor, full-back Smith and replacement flanker Squire. CLEVELAND -- Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert felt he made a big mistake when he fired Mike Brown as his coach in 2010. That didnt stop him from doing it again. Browns second shot with the Cavs ended Monday after one just one season as Gilbert dismissed the only Cleveland coach who has ever made it to the NBA finals. Brown had been re-hired last April by Gilbert, who regretted dismissing him four years earlier. While the Cavs record improved and they made strides defensively under Brown this season, the club missed the playoffs again and Gilbert decided it was time to make another change. "This is a very tough business," Gilbert said in a statement. "It pains all of us here that we needed to make the difficult decision of releasing Mike Brown. Mike worked hard over this last season to move our team in the right direction. Although, there was some progress from our finish over the few prior seasons, we believe we need to head in a different direction. We wish Mike and his family nothing but the best." In addition to firing Brown, Gilbert announced hes retaining David Griffin as the clubs full-time general manager. Griffin had been the interim GM since Feb. 6, when Gilbert fired Chris Grant one day after the Cavs lost to a Los Angeles Lakers team which finished the game with just five eligible players. Gilbert said Griffin would lead the search for Browns successor. Its not known what input Griffin had in Browns firing. Griffin has ties to former Phoenix executive Steve Kerr, who is one of New York president Phil Jacksons top choices to take over the Knicks. Griffin also has worked with Mike DAntoni and Alvin Gentry. Other coaches who could get consideration for the Cavs opening include Mark Jackson and George Karl. Brown had four years remaining on his $20 million contract. Brown, who was fired last year by the Lakers five games into his second season, could not be reached for comment. Brown went 272-138 in his first stint with Cleveland. Led by superstar LeBron James, the Cavs made the finals for the first time in 2007 and were title contenders throughout Browns tenure. However, they didnt advance past the Eastern Conference semifinals four years ago and Brown was let go. At the time, it appeared Gilbert was making the move -- and hiring Byron Scott as coach -- to appease James and hopefully keep him in Cleveland. James, though, decided to leave as a free agent for Miami, where he is chasing his straight third NBA title with the Heat. "Its just a tough business. I mean, thats all it is. Its a tough business and, you know, Mike Brown got the short end of a tough business," James said. Gilbert brought back Brown to fix Clevelands defence, and the Cavs improved, moving from last in the league in field-goal percentage to 12th. But the offence never flowed like it should and the Cavs didnt make a late playoff push despite a favourable schedule down the stretch. Clevelands players didnt care for Browns defence-first philosophy and there seemed to be a disconnect between the Cavs and the coaching staff. Brown seemed resigned to his fate following the season finale, when he said he would support whatever decision Gilbert made. "Its his team," Brown said. Cleveland went 17-16 under Griffin, who worked as Grants assistant before being promoted. Gilbert said he interviewed several other candidates before deciding to remove the "interim" from Griffins title. "We chose David as our GM because we believe he is the best person to lead our franchise at this critical time and into the future," Gilbert said. "David brings over two decades of experience. He knows the ins and outs of this league as well as anyone and is also an outstanding talent evaluator." The Cavaliers will hold a news conference on Tuesday at the teams facility in Independence. Gilbert had high praise for Griffin, who previously worked in Phoenixs front office before coming to Cleveland. "He is a general manager who is aligned with our culture and philosophy which is the foundation of how we do business," Gilbert said. "David is not only passionate about his own job but also cares deeply about the success of everyone around him. His presence alone creates an infectious positive environment with players, coaches, front office people and even our fan base. We already saw some progress in the short time David led our basketball side in the latter part of this past season. Clearly, we have substantial work ahead of us and I am confident that Griff will play an essential part of the growth and success of our organization." While the Cavs showed signs of progress with Brown, he was unable to get one of the leagues youngest teams to play consistently. His replacement will have a similar challenge, assuming Griffin doesnt do a complete overhaul to Clevelands roster. The Cavs are entering a critical summer. Theyll once again be in the draft lottery and the club is expected to be active in free agency. The team must also decide whether to offer Irving a maximum contract extension in July. Gerard Deulofeu scored on his first league start with a left-footed shot from the six-yard box in the 45th before Seamus Coleman added a second four minutes after the interval. Bryan Oviedo, replacing the injured Leighton Baines, scored on only his second league start in nearly 18 months with a low strike from outside the area to make it 3-0 in the 58th. Belgium forward Romelu Lukaku, on loan from Chelsea, grabbed a fourth at close range in the 79th. The Toffees have 24 points from 13 games and are undefeated at home in the league throughout the calendar year. Stoke, hovering near the relegation zone, has 13 from 13. The 19-year-old Deulofeu is on loan from Barcelona and was given his chance by Catalonia-born manager Roberto Martinez. The first-half focus was almost entirely on Deulofeu, who produced the first and last action of the opening 45 minutes with plenty of contributions inbetween. Having seen an early low free kick parried by Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, Deulofeus angled shot was also denied at the near post. Stokes keeper was by far the busiest and when James McCarthy charged forward and exchangedd passed with Lukaku, the Bosnia international could only watch the midfielder fire wide.dddddddddddd Begovic produced a brilliant double save to stop Leon Osmans deflected shot and Lukakus close-range follow-up either side of another two angled efforts from Deulofeu before Lukaku headed wide from Oviedos cross. The traffic was virtually one way and Stoke managed just one shot on target late in the half when Jon Walters strike from Peter Crouchs knockdown was easily saved by Tim Howard. Just as it appeared Evertons dominance would go unrewarded, Deulofeu struck, cutting in from the left this time and getting the ball back via Osman and Gareth Barry to finally beat Begovic with seconds in the half remaining. Four minutes after the break right back Coleman made it 2-0 when his mis-hit shot looped past the Stoke goalkeeper. If Colemans goal was a surprise, Oviedos was totally unexpected. The Costa Rican collected Deulofeus short corner, switched the ball on to his weaker right foot and powered it home from distance. The defender then turned provider with the cross for Lukaku to score his eighth league goal of the season from close range to add to the two he scored last weekend against Liverpool in a pulsating 3-3 Merseyside derby. Italy manager Cesare Prandelli has resigned following Italys 1-0 loss to Uruguay at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. CNN and Gazzetta dello Sport reporter Tancredi Palmeri broke the news via Twitter Tuesday afternoon. Italian Football Association President Giancarlo Abete has also resigned, according to Palmeri. Prandelli was unable to lead Italy into the knockout stage, as the team finished third in Group D with a 1-0-2 record. After defeating England 2-1 in the tournament opener, Italy suffered back-to-back 1-0 losses to Costa Rica and Uruguay. The now-56-year-old took over the Italian national team in 2010, replacing Marcello Lippi after Italy failed to advance past the group stage at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. To baseball players, he was the spirit of the game. His teammates loved him, and his list of admirers included President Barack Obama to Pearl Jam to athletes from all over the sports world. And they all got the same person, all the time.Ernie was exactly what you saw, said Don Kessinger, a shortstop who played with Banks in the 1960s. He was a great ballplayer, a great teammate and a great friend. What everyone saw included 512 home runs during a 19-year career that put him in the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. But perhaps more importantly, what everyone appreciated was Mr. Cub, an always positive attitude that sparked a steady stream of tributes after Banks death Friday night at age 83.I know he was Mr. Cub, but he was really Mr. Baseball, White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf said Saturday. He was really a great, great ambassador for the game.A makeshift memorial outside Wrigley Field on Saturday included flowers, an Ernie Banks bobblehead and pictures of the slugger with fans. A No. 14 jersey was draped over one part of a small fence with the inscription Lets play two — the iconic saying he was known for — and then Not without you written under his trademark line.Another small green sign read Say Holy Cow to Harry and Ron for us, referring to broadcaster Harry Carays famous saying and Ron Santo, another former Cubs player and broadcaster who passed away in 2010.He was the franchise, said Jim Banach, 53, a lifelong Cubs fan who grew on the South Side of Chicago.Linda OBrien, 54, a pharmacy tech from nearby Oak Lawn, said she met Banks a couple of times. He was just so nice, she said. The one time when I got his autograph at the Cubs convention, he was making everybody do exercises in line. I thought that was pretty funny. The Cubs will certainly spend the upcoming season honouring Banks, right from the start. The 2015 major league opener is at Wrigley Field, a Sunday night game on April 5 against St. Louis. In a statement, Obama and first lady Michelle Obama expressed their condolences to the family of Ernie Banks, and to every Chicagoan and baseball fan who loved him. The president said Banks became known as much for his optimism and love of the game as his home runs and back-to-back National League MVPs.He was beloved by baseball fans everywhere, including Michelle, who, when she was a girl, used to sit with her dad and watch him play on TV, Obama said. And in 2013, it was my honoour to present Ernie with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.ddddddddddddSomewhere, the sun is shining, the air is fresh, his teams behind him, and Mr. Class — Mr. Cub — is ready to play two.Hall of Fame umpire Doug Harvey said Banks was equally positive around umps. Banks, in fact, never was ejected from a game.He wasnt a griper. Never complained about a strike or an out or a call, Harvey told The Associated Press. Some guys would turn their heads after a pitch and look at you like you were nuts. Not Ernie. It was always, Isnt this a great day to be alive and playing baseball?Banks was playing for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues when the Cubs discovered him in 1953, and purchased his contract for $10,000. He made his major league debut at shortstop on Sept. 17 that year — he was the Cubs first black player — and three days later hit his first home run.One of Banks biggest influences was Buck ONeil, a former player and manager in the Negro Leagues who had a hand in the slugger joining the Cubs. ONeil, who died in 2006, helped prepare Banks for the racism that some of the first black players encountered in the majors. They all seemed to have that innate ability to not allow those experiences to harden their hearts, and an uncanny ability to love universally, said Bob Kendrick, the president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. And Ernie got that. I think he got a lot of that from Buck ONeil.Banks was a perennial All-Star, but never reached the post-season and retired in 1971. The Cubs finished below .500 in all but six of his seasons and remain without a pennant since 1945.Like Banks, Hall of Famer Al Kaline made his big league debut in 1953 and played his first All-Star game in 1955. Kaline reached his only World Series in 1968, leading the Tigers to the title.Soon after, he got a telegram from Banks. He knew he was running out of time to get to the World Series. He knew I had played a lot of years, too, Kaline, now 80, told the AP on Saturday. I didnt know him well then, but he understood what it meant to get there later in your career. He congratulated me on becoming a world champion. He played on a lot of good teams, not a lot of great ones. Those fans in Chicago, they loved him. They never got to see a World Series, but they can always say they got to see the great Ernie Banks.___AP Sports Writer Andy Seligman in Chicago and Baseball Writer Ben Walker in New York contributed to this report.___Jay Cohen can be reached at http://www.twitter.com/jcohenap ' ' '
